A FIELD GUIDE TO YOUR LITTLE ESCAPE

About Capybara Treasure Trails

Capybara Treasure Trails is a free browser exploration game about a small explorer with a shovel, a backpack, and an unusually good reason to get muddy. Somewhere beneath the forest meadow lies a hidden hot spring. Your job is to read the clues, choose where to dig, and help your capybara find a warm place to rest before the shovel counter runs out.

The forest is a quiet setting for a compact treasure hunt. Trees and rocks shape the paths, patches of grass invite investigation, and the capybara reacts when a search gets warmer. There is no countdown pushing you forward. You can stop, look around, and decide what the last clue means before making your next move. The challenge comes from choosing useful digging spots rather than moving quickly.

The game's cozy theme brings together a capybara, warm water, and little objects that make a spring visit feel special. A rubber duck can become a bathing companion; a big orange adds a splash of sunshine to the journey. These optional discoveries give you something else to search for, but the buried spring is the destination. Finding it ends the adventure with a well-earned soak.

Each new adventure places the treasures again, so memorizing a previous location is less useful than learning to interpret directions. Think of your explorer as a patient field researcher: observe, test a patch, then adjust your route. This guide explains the rules used by the current game, including when a scan uses a charge and why an exciting clue does not always lead to the spring.

YOUR FIRST TWENTY DIGS

Game Mechanics & Walkthrough Guide

1. Get comfortable with movement

Choose Play as guest to begin without creating an account. Use WASD or the arrow keys to walk; on a phone or tablet, use the on-screen directional buttons. Press Space or J to dig, or tap the Dig button. Press E or tap Scan to use the detector. The Help button inside the game repeats the basic controls.

Walking costs no shovel energy, so explore freely before digging. The forest boundary, trees, and rocks limit where you can stand. If a patch is blocked by roots or rocks, move onto open grass. You do not need to spend a dig simply to travel, and waiting does not drain your counter. On a small screen, try landscape orientation if the controls feel crowded.

2. Treat your shovel as a limited budget

You begin with twenty digs. Digging a new, valid patch uses one unit, even when you find an item. A patch can only be dug once; trying the same patch again does not use another unit. The counter represents digging attempts, not a stamina bar that recharges while you stand still. Finding the spring wins the round, including on your final dig. Running out without finding it ends the attempt.

An empty dig gives feedback about the nearest undiscovered treasure. “Far away” means at least nine grid steps away; “Getting warmer” means four to eight; “Very close” means one to three. The first two clues include a direction such as NorthEast. When you are very close, investigate adjacent patches carefully. Clues follow grid distance, counting horizontal and vertical steps, so moving diagonally changes both parts of that distance.

3. Make the most of the eight-tile detector

The detector checks for the nearest uncollected item within eight grid steps. It starts with three charges. A successful detection spends one charge, but a “No signal nearby” result spends none. Scanning never uses a dig. Its signal stays visible for five seconds; wait for that signal to finish before trying another scan.

A strong signal means the target is at most two steps away, clear means three to five, and faint means six to eight. “Right underfoot” is your cue to dig where you are standing. If the detector finds nothing, walk into a different part of the meadow and try again. If it finds something, note the direction before moving. Use the next scan to narrow your search instead of spending all three from the same position.

4. Follow evidence to the spring and collectibles

The hidden hot spring, rubber duck, and big orange all produce signals until found. The detector's orange appearance does not mean it only locates oranges. A promising direction can lead to any of the three items. Once you collect one, later clues may point elsewhere because they now follow the nearest remaining treasure.

For a first attempt, walk to an open clearing and scan. Follow a detected direction, then use an empty dig's feedback to adjust your route. Save some digs for the final nearby search. Treat stones and flowers as scenery rather than guaranteed treasure markers: items are placed anew for each adventure. If collecting both extras matters to you, remember that uncovering the spring ends the round immediately. There is no opportunity to keep searching afterward.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the game free, and do I need an account?

Yes. You can play for free using Play as guest. No download or account is required for guest play. Account features are optional. This website uses Google AdSense on its homepage; the separate play page and game screen do not include advertising code.

Where is my progress saved?

When you launch from this website, guest progress is saved in this browser on this device. Use Save & leave to return to your journal, then Continue to resume an unfinished adventure. Clearing site data, using another browser, or ending a private browsing session can remove access to that save. Starting a new adventure replaces the current trail.

If you sign in, progress is also sent to the account service and cached on the device. Account storage is currently experimental: server resets or redeployments can erase server-held accounts and saves on temporary hosting. Do not rely on it as a permanent backup. Your journal records completed rounds, springs found, and collectibles from finished adventures.

Which devices can I use?

The game uses a browser canvas and JavaScript, with keyboard controls for computers and touch buttons for phones and tablets. Try a current browser with JavaScript enabled. Performance depends on your device, and not every browser or screen size has been tested. The visual forest and positional clues are central to play; the game does not currently provide a complete nonvisual playing mode.

Can I pause and return later?

There is no round timer. Save & leave takes you back to the journal and preserves an unfinished trail when browser storage is available. Wait for the save message before closing the page. If the account service is unavailable, you can still play as a guest. The site does not currently provide an installable offline mode.

Why did a scan or dig not happen?

Close the Help panel first, and wait for any digging animation or five-second scan to finish. Check that you still have scan charges and are standing on a new patch of diggable ground. After the round ends, choose a new adventure to play again. A scan without a nearby target deliberately keeps your charge.

How do I recover an account or report a problem?

Account recovery uses the private recovery code shown during registration; email password recovery is not enabled. Keep that code somewhere safe. For website questions, bug reports, or privacy requests, visit About & contact. Include your browser and a description of what happened, but never send your password or recovery code.
